Catalyst 9500 Fixed 10G Core Buying Guide

Use this buying guide when the switch itself is a fixed Catalyst 9500 10G platform and you must choose between sixteen and forty native SFP+ ports.

For 100G/400G fixed spines, use the 100G fixed switch guide. For Catalyst 3850 fiber aggregation, use the 3850 fiber guide.

What this guide covers

Topic In scope?
Fixed Catalyst 9500 10G core / aggregation Yes
PoE copper access No
100G/400G data-center spines No

Architecture / role

C9500-16X/40X sit in fixed 10G core/aggregation roles — not PoE closets.

Density and modules

Model Fixed 10G Modular uplink listed
C9500-16X-E 16 × SFP+ C9500-NM-8X or C9500-NM-2Q
C9500-40X-E 40 × SFP+ Confirm on quote if additional modules apply

Performance

Model Capacity Forwarding
C9500-16X-E Up to 480 Gbps full-duplex Up to 360 Mpps
C9500-40X-E Up to 960 Gbps full-duplex Up to 720 Mpps

Read capacity after port count. Larger figures track denser faceplates.

StackWise Virtual

Confirm whether the design uses StackWise Virtual, which pairs, and which software train. Do not assume SV cables/licenses are included.

Power / rack

  • Both list ~1.73 × 17.5 × 21.52 in chassis envelopes.
  • 950 W-class AC PSUs with front-to-back airflow language — confirm 1+1.
  • C9500-16X-E lists about 23.6 lb on authorized data.

Common procurement mistakes

  1. Ordering 40X for headroom when 16X covers day one.
  2. Omitting the network module on 16X.
  3. Ignoring chassis depth.
  4. Skipping optic SKUs on the RFQ.
  5. Assuming StackWise Virtual without design notes.
  6. Mixing access PoE line items into the same undefined RFQ.

FAQ

Is higher capacity always better?

No. Match native 10G port count first.

Does 16X include a network module?

Treat C9500-NM-8X or C9500-NM-2Q as a named option on the quote.

Are these PoE switches?

No. Both shortlisted PIDs are Non-PoE.

Where is the side-by-side comparison?
What about Catalyst 9300 access?

Different role. Use C9300 PoE/data access PIDs for closets — not this guide.

Feature set on these examples?

Worked examples use Network Essentials (-E) PIDs. Quote -A only when required.
