10G Aggregation vs Data-Center Leaf: Split the Shortlist First

10G aggregation and a 25G or 100G data-center leaf can both show “high-speed fiber” on a shortlist. They are still different jobs. Split the RFQ by role before comparing PIDs.

Buyer rule: aggregation connects other switches. A leaf connects servers. A 128-port 200GE switch is a third case — fabric density — not a closet uplink.

Why these classes should not share one scorecard

An aggregation switch is bought to take access uplinks and hand them northbound. A leaf is bought to face servers. A high-radix 200/400/800G switch is bought for fabric scale. PoE watts, server NIC speed, and optic rate are not interchangeable columns.

Decision table

Question 10G aggregation 10G or 25G leaf High-speed fabric
What it connects Access switches Servers Spines or a dense fabric
Typical faceplate SFP+ plus faster uplinks SFP+ or SFP28 plus QSFP28 QSFP56 or multi-rate 200/400/800G
PoE No No No
Example PIDs S6730-H24X6C, WS-C3850-24XS-E CE6820-48S6CQ-B, CE6885-48YS8CQ RG-S6980-128DC, RG-S6990-64OC2XS

When 10G aggregation is the right class

Use it when closet switches already exist and the missing piece is fiber distribution. S6730-H24X6C lists 24 × 10GE SFP+ and 6 × 40/100GE QSFP28 with iStack. WS-C3850-24XS-E lists 24 × SFP+ and a network-module slot on a Catalyst 3850.

When a data-center leaf is the right class

CE6820-48S6CQ-B is a 10GE SFP+ faceplate with 6 × 100GE uplinks (2.16 Tbps). CE6885-48YS8CQ is 48 × SFP28 and 8 × QSFP28 (8 Tbps). Pick from the server optic, not from the aggregation shortlist. The CE6820-B vs CE6885 comparison stays inside that leaf decision.

When the switch is fabric-scale, not a leaf

RG-S6980-128DC lists 128 × 200GE QSFP56. RG-S6990-64OC2XS lists 64 ports across 200/400/800G. Confirm the optic speed. Neither replaces a 24-port aggregation switch.

Campus copper is a separate shortlist

Data-only 1G access such as C9300-48T-A, PoE access such as S5735-L24P4S-A and S5560S-28P-SI, and the smaller S5016PV5-EI-PWR-S do not belong in a fiber aggregation RFQ. For PoE versus data-only 9300 density, see C9300-24P vs C9300-48P-A.

RFQ checklist

  1. Role: aggregation, leaf, or high-speed fabric.
  2. Exact PID, not a family name.
  3. Server or access speed that must be matched.
  4. Uplink or optic rate, including whether a listed range (200/400/800G) collapses to one speed.
  5. Stacking only if the PID lists it.
  6. Airflow only if the record states it.
